Soundtrack and GarageBand: Compared

Friday January 23, 2004. 09:55 PM, by peterkirn Apple > Apple
Apple : Soundtrack and GarageBand: Compared - macmusicEric B. from Apple has posted a message explaining all the differences of Soundtrack and GarageBand -- an issue I discussed on today's Inside Mac Radio show audio feature and here on MacMusic.org, but didn't discuss in detail.
Of course, as we've been saying, the biggest feature of Soundtrack you can't get in GarageBand is video scoring, so many of the features have to do with that, but there's more, too: ACID loop import, multiple loop collections, integrated recording and creating of Apple Loops (though GB can use the free Apple Loops SDK), 24 bit/96kHz audio resolution, pan/effects automation (GB has only volume automation), automated key and tempo changes, multiple-take audio recording, ripple edit and paste, export of individual tracks to other applications (possible in GB via workarounds), and, perhaps most importantly, Soundtrack is the only app with MIDI sync to other apps. See Eric's list of differences below.

My main complaints are actually with features GarageBand has, like MIDI recording and virtual instruments, that Soundtrack lacks. And you can't integrate them easily with Soundtrack since Garage Band lacks MIDI sync. Let's hope a future Soundtrack release addresses this, making Soundtrack a "GarageBand Pro."

Thanks to Andy B for the tip!
