Apple has launched QuickTime 6.3. This new version provides the QuickTime community with immediate access to 3GPP technology. 3GPP is the new worldwide standard for the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over new, high-speed wireless networks. Defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, this standard seeks to provide uniform delivery of rich multimedia over newly evolved, broadband mobile networks (3rd generation networks) to a new breed of multimedia-enabled wireless devices. Tailored to the unique requirements of mobile devices, 3GPP takes advantage of MPEG-4, the new standard for delivery of video and audio over the Internet.
QuickTime at the Core :
When defining the MPEG-4 standard, the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) chose to base MPEG-4 on the QuickTime architecture. And because 3GPP is based on the MPEG-4 standard, 3GPP benefits from the extensibility, scalability and stability of QuickTime. This means that 3GPP (.3gp) files inherit from QuickTime the ability to mix different types of media, like video, audio and text, in a single file thanks to its track-based file format. .3gp files also inherit QuickTime's scalability, allowing media at a broad range of bandwidths to be delivered in the same type of file. Additionally, 3GPP benefits from the time-tested stability of QuickTime.
