New Roland Synths: SH-201, Juno-G, VP-550

Friday January 20, 2006. 01:43 AM, by lepetitmartien NAMM06 > Music Hardware > Roland
Music Hardware : New Roland Synths: SH-201, Juno-G, VP-550 - macmusicRoland launches news synths, two have some old time rememberence attached to their name and one is a supposedly new thing. Prices are TBA.

- The SH-201 takes its name from its analogue ancestors, but is not analogue at all. It's all analogue modelling (so a decent virtual analogue if the Roland guys learned from Alesis, Clavia or Access as I hope), easy to live digital synth. The layout is qualified of Ultra-EZ (clear is a shorter word) and it packs a D-Beam in along the 49 keys keyboard. It has an audio In to treat audio inside, and a USB port as you can edit and record the audio directly in your Mac using a simple VSTi editor, nice touch.

- The Juno-G follows the Juno-D, steal the look of the famous Juno-106, but is packing a derivative of the sound engine of the Fantom family like the D model. Only bigger. There are 128 voices polyphony, SRX and PC card slots, USB for MIDI, AIF/WAV transfer, D-beam and 61 keys keyboard. Also included is an audio/MIDI multitrack recorder with mixer, which could be fun as roland know a thing or two in this direction.

- The VP-550 is a different beast. This is a 49 notes "Vocal Designer" keyboard. Its voice modeling engine will design for you, using the Classical, Gospel, Pops, Male/Female, and vocoder models, backing vocals in real time. The ensembles types are mixed chorus, jazz scat, boy's choir, humming, full strings, and slow strings. Both models and ensembles can be played at the same time. additional expression possible with the decidedly ubiquitous D-Beam. The vocoder is qualified as high resolution, if it's a really good one, this is going to be a killer as the market lacks of a decent and recent vocoder keyboard.
