Digidesign announces ProTools 6.0 for Mac OSX

Music Software : Digidesign announces ProTools 6.0 for Mac OSX - macmusicMore than a few Mac Musicians were getting all het up and worried. Had Digidesign let them drop? Was the lure of the PC market blinding the creators of PT systems? Even the Mbox will soon be shipped with PTLE 5.3.3 for Windows XP.

There, there! Don't fret! All PT clients on Mac systems can now, or will soon be able to switch to OSX. How silly to think that Digidesign would forget that their old faithful clients still had money to spend. Of course, PT Free users are not clients yet, and so are not mentioned – yet!

For the biggies this concerns Pro Tools 6.0 for Digidesign-approved Pro Tools TDM systems: Pro Tools|HD, Pro Tools|24 MIX, and Pro Tools|24.

It also concerns the non-negligible market of LE system users: only support for Digi 001 and ToolBox now, but support for Mbox and Digi 002 is coming soon.

OSX compatibility with AVoption|XL, Unity, and MediaManager is scheduled for Q2, 2003, and Windows XP users should get the new features of PT then, too.

Digidesign points out "a solid interaction between the Pro Tools environment and Power Mac G4s". Perhaps this is also true for G3s using PTLE, but they can't really talk about our 'ancient' Macs when announcing a new PT, can they? Or do PT 6 and OSX demand much more processing power?

Anyway, what are these new features: new look, more organisation, more MIDI, and more control:

- a new look for the Mix, Edit, and Transport windows, which apparently make PT more user friendly;
- multi-user login functionality enabling individual users to save custom display, operation, editing, automation, processing, compatibility, and MIDI preferences;
- new DigiBase file management utility;
- enhanced MIDI functionality (including hi-res groove templates);
- additional Beat Detective features;
- new Import Session options;
- plug-in functionality enhancements;
- MachineControl additions;
etc.

Well, well! They did reserve us a nice surprise didn't they!
