MOTU unveiled the 2408mk3, a single rack-space 96 kHz audio interface for Macintosh and Windows personal computers. This new expandable PCI card-based audio workstation represents a major upgrade to MOTU's 2408mkII interface, which the mk3 will replace at the same price ($995 for a core system, $695 for expansion I/Os). New features include 96 kHz analog and digital I/O, expansion up to 96 channels, DSP-driven mixing and monitoring, legacy I/O support, on-board SMPTE and video synchronization and software-switchable analog input levels.

Mackie Designs has released an OS upgrade for the company's HDR24/96 and MDR24/96 hard disk recorders that implements industry-standard Broadcast Wave as the native recording format on both units and enables compatibility with the recently announced OPT24 and Serial9 accessory cards.
Keith Olsen, Corporate Director, Global Recording Market and Product Development at Mackie Designs Inc. said "With Broadcast Wave on board, users can now easily transfer files between the Mackie recorders and any other program that supports the Broadcast Wave format."

The USB ASIO driver connects even more external soundcards with a number of audio applications and virtual instruments at latencies so low you can't feel them any longer: down to 4ms according to the company. It's main advantage is a dramatic increase in performance meaning that more of the computer's CPU power can be used for what it's meant for: Sound generation and effect processing.

Steinberg has released a new VST instrument called PLEX. Developed in conjunction with Wolfgang Palm, PLEX is a software synthesizer that supports Macintosh (9 and X) and Windows running any VST 2.0-compatible host.
